Ingat, dulu Netscape juga pernah punya kasus dengan tag tag khususnya, tapi
itu dulu, sebelum IE lahir.
Saya kebetulan baca buku Web Programming Unleashed, dan ada yang menarik di
Chapter 27 tentang Netscape yang sempet membuat resah juga ihihihih, baca
aja nih:

Why does the Netscape Navigator (hereafter just called Netscape) generate
such strong feelings and cause such a big furor? It is, after all, just
another Web browser, right? Basically, Netscape is "just another browser,"
or at least it started out that way in October 1994 when Mosaic
Communications released the first beta version. Netscape was then (and
still is) a very good browser that did its job with style and seldom
crashed. It was faster and easier to use than NCSA Mosaic, which was the
hot browser at the time. There was no trouble in paradise, and everyone was
happy until March 1995, when some new and useful HTML enhancements were
added to Netscape; for example, a tag to center text and pictures. All in
all, a centered header or a picture is really quite nice. The fact that the
accepted standards lacked a general center tag was the problem. Netscape
Communications Corporation (which was its new name) had not proposed the
additions to the Web committees and subcommittees and gone through a
lengthy process until the additions became part of the accepted standard,
which is about as close you can come to committing deadly sins on the Net.
All other browser vendors had more or less grudgingly agreed to wait for
HTML 3.

So Netscape awalnya juga mirip2 kayak Microsoft juga manuvernya, ya
wajarlah, semua company mana ada yang mau kehilangan customer :)
Eh mengenai perjuangan Microsoft di internet, khususnya di bidang browser
juga menarik untuk disimak, di Web Programming Unleahsed chapter 28
diceritakan tentang kegusaran pihak engineering Microsoft akibat kesuksesan
Netscape di pasar broswer pada waktu itu.
Akhirnya Microsoft yang punya banyak duit dan punya tenaga programmer yang
tidak hanya pintar, tapi juga bisa bekerja dengan cepat, maka proyek
browser mulai dikerjakan. Diceritakan juga chapter ini bahwa ketika itu
Desember 1995 belum ada internet division di Microsoft, eh tau-tau bulan
July 1996 di Microsoft udah berdiri divisi Internet Platform & Tools yang
punya karyawan 2500 orang yang jumlahnya setara dengan jumlah seluruh
karyawan Netscape plus 6 buah perusahaan internet, gile bener hehehheh :)
Semenjak itu IE mulai jadi rival berat Netscape dengan mengimplmentasikan
beberapa HTML extension yang tidak disupport oleh Netscape dan broswer2
lain, seperti <BGSOUND>, <MARQUEE> etc etc.
Dan Microsoft juga justru menambahkan kemampuan beberapa tag yang
sebelumnya diciptakan oleh Netscape seperti <TABLE> dan <FRAME>

The good news resulting from Microsoft and Netscape battling each other is
that those of us who design and author Web pages end up winning in the end.
I, for one, am very happy that there are two quality Web browsers on the
market. The only tough part is keeping up on which browser supports which
extension and creating work-arounds for the browser that doesn't support
the other's tag.
