|Well, this is fairly dry humor. Explaining it may be like explaining
any
|othe joke:
|Q: Is it a fact a duck can fly?
|A: No, it's a matter of opinion (a pinion).
|
|What?
|
|"Pinion" is a synonym for "wing", so...
|
|Oh. Yeah, that's funny.
|
|Anysway, here goes.
|
|1. Read Jakob Nielsen's website (www.useit.com). His deal is
*useability*,
|and you'll see he isn't very fond of people who duplicate someone
else's
|look because it's cool. To him, cool doesn't count--useability
counts. Cool
|*can* count, but only if the site is useable.
|
|2. In an old "Alertbox" (JN's periodic column), he talks about
"yellow
|fever." Perhaps you remember when CNet made a big splash with
the navibar
|left idea, and everyone started, um, "sincerely flattering"
them, right down
|to the color scheme. JN's deals was per #1: sure it's cool,
but does it work
|on *every* website? NO. Stop w/the slavish devotion to cool
and get with
|useability.
|
|3. Another JN deal is inaccuracy of marketing tools vs. web
users and pages.
|He says they are asking the wrong questions, and he's pretty
well got the
|dope to prove it.
|
|4. Marketing says, "Green and blue are cool. People are swayed
by it. It
|will make them *stick to your site*!" and "site stickiness"
is a hot topic
|just now, although not everyone thinks it's enough. See Mark
Hurst at
|www.GoodExperience.com to have that bubble burst. Particularly
see his white
|paper on good experience vs. stickiness.
|
|5. JN doesn't control the cover of his book. Marketing does.
They believe
|green and blue will sell his book (it's a web book, after all!),
so they
|slap it on there.
|
|6. Ha-ha. Cognitive dissonance: the man who sez, "don't be a
slave to trends
|on the web, and don't necessarily listen to Marketing" gets
his book colored
|in a slavish color by Marketing droids! It is to laugh!!
