1. The artist's answer: it is contrary to the essence of the medium... a
website is by nature interlinked with all other sites (thus the word web). A
small pop-up window removes the ability to use the addressbar, the history
and bookmark menus, the back button... a user in a small toolbarless window
is a captured user.
2. The html person's answer: you don't know what resolution the person is
on, what browser, or if they have disabled JavaScript... your pop-up may not
work, or may not work as well as you hoped.
3. The usability person's answer: you have just taken away the user's #1
most useful tool for navigating: the back button. You may believe that you
have thought of everything, and provided the user with everything they might
need, but then what happens if you didn't, or if things went wrong? I was
trying to file at H&R block, and you file in one of those little pop-ups. As
I was filing on the 15th, their servers were overwhelmed, and I couldn't hit
"back" to try to access them by resubmitting my information. No refresh,
either, of course. Very annoying.
