A couple of my friends had submitted my site and later, I submitted your NR10 because I think it is really cool! When he didn't approve either site, I thought I would write and ask him why since he seems like a nice enough guy. I also just mentioned that he featured Network Solutions site (which I think is one of the ugliest sites in the world) and yet mine didn't make the cut .. so I was curious. Here's what he said. I thought you might be interested. I don't agree with him at all .. not one bit. I couldn't begin to tell you the amount of compliments I have received on the opening you did for me. People go crazy about it. As a matter of fact, a reporter just called me today from a magazine called PCWeek (a huge magazine here) and he might be doing an article about my work .. and guess why he called and what he liked? This is tough, because you've asked me to critique the work. Some people take the critique well, others don't - one problem with design work is that it's somewhat subjective. So my opinions are not necessarily facts - but I guess that's why designers are a special breed - we all have our own sensibilities for things and that's what makes us different, and thus gives us our own value. So I risk losing you as a surfer by telling you how I feel about about your your site and www.nr10.com - the two I just looked at. But you've helped me out for sure, so I owe you this much at the very least. I just ohope you don't hate me or think I'm a pompous ass. If you knew me you'd know that's far from true. So here's my honest opinion, as you've asked for: The evolvedsites Flash animation has a few things that dont' work well for me, and combined, they don't add up to what I think is a CoolHomepages sites - The color palette is basically black, white and light brown. Just not a compelling or interesting color palette. The message is a little lackluster - the message is essentially "do you want a prehistoric type site, or a modern one?" - it's not a question that needs to be asked, because nobody would pick prehistoric. The typography across both evolvedsites and www.nr10.com is lackluster. It uses Arial or Helvetica almost exclusively, which is the most common font in the world. It's be nice to use a font that says more about your piece than Arial. I don't mean to suggest a weird or really out there font -- but just something with a ncie feel other than Arial. Frutiger? Univers? Helvetica Neue? Interstate? Meta? MAaybe something less "standard" would be good actually. All the ones I just listed are pretty standard. The part of the animation where the man paints or produces the horse was confusing. At first I thought the horse was a dog. But then after watching it a few times I figured that you were trying to bring to mind that man painted horses in cave drawings (part of our evolution). If I'm correct, then it's confusing, because modern man didnt' do cave drawigns, - that was prehistoric man -- and the prehistoric men in the animation have already faded away. So I was confused. The blueish image of the man at right holding a computer makes me thing you might be able to fix my computer. So that's a little confusing. I have a personal pet peeve - it's lower case type with lots of tracking/kerning/space in between. Traditional typographers will tell you that's a no-no. It's OK to do that kind of spacing on CAPS here and there - but lower case letterforms are really meant to work more closely together, so that the empty space between them can interact. The www.nr10.com site on my G3 and G4 just blows past me - you may be looking at it on a slower machine, but it takes 4-5 seconds to play the whole thing. I have a feeling that will be a surprise to you, because I'm not thinking it's intended to go that fast. it's not compelling because I can't absorb any of it. So that's it. I hope you don't hate me. I don't know what else to do but give you my honest opinion. I hope none of this sounds rude - I've tried hard to be honest, but not rude. As far Network Solution, the reason that site is there is because of their layout. The two column ting with the little icons is something I can imagein alot of companies may want to 'borrow'. Additionally, the fact that they have their number one most important item (the domain searching box) right up there in bold gold, front and center, impossible to miss, is smart. it's not a beautiful site at all....but that layout could work well for a lot of businesses who want to punch up their 6 most important products or features. That's why NetSol is there, just to let you know what I was thinking.
