my machine is a powerbook 5,8 G4 1,67Mhz
Sound:
oh, Yes, there is sound from the cam-builtin-mic. cool.
i can select it in SystemPerferences > Sound > In
and ist works (poor sound from a poor mic)
but then i can NOT record a video with sound! (QuicktimePro 7.1.2)
so like that what others reported from IntelMacs..

Compression:
for ansering your questions aboute compression-slider, i made some shots with macam, with different settings (see link below),
and some screenshots from settingbar.
ther is 6 compression-settings. the pics goes from the left position (comp_1.jpg seems lower compression / higher quality) to the right position (comp_6.jpg). please note the different brightness and contrast. I canged only the compression-setting!! Maybe on the second shots (comp1_*.jpg) you can see it better.
There was a bad stuation an best compression: the picture make crasy fractals, or somthing that. a made a video.
something happen with a special light-situation. hmm.. no idea.. (see link)
But only on this compression-set Quicktime regulate the Framerate and contrast for realy good picture-result.
Contrast-Slider.
only first touch make the picture brighter (whatever direction).
than I can´t to note any difference!
Format:
The VGA and the SIF format works fine, but CIF+QCIF not.
