My question is, where does the alignment happen that guarantee 'characters' is aligned by 4-byte?

It doesn’t.

I know it must happen at somewhere, but just can't find it.

Nope.

Many, if not most, processors can support this optimization even when the pointer is not aligned. We just need the appropriate ifdefs so the optimization is not attempted on processors that don’t support it.
