While this is not a perfect solution, a common technique is to call (from onload) a DOM method like offsetHeight that forces layout to run. That way the bulk of the work required to paint is forced to happen before the benchmark considers the page load complete.

Okay, this is interesting, thank you for all the comments. I agree that there is some degree of inaccuracy in the benchmark result, but I think this is something we accept and can live with at the moment; however anything we can do to improve the accuracy--even slightly--is useful.
