I recommend reading through http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-dom/2012OctDec/thread.html#msg143 and https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/es-discuss/2012-December/thread.html#27401 to some extent first. In particular the discussion is about what happens to the [[Prototype]] of objects when objects are adopted and when document.open() is invoked. Both Gecko and IE mutate the [[Prototype]] and the tentative plan therefore is to align the standard with that.
