MacPorts has prebuilt binaries using default variants, so it sounds like the 
system isn't finding one and is instead building from source.

What OS version do you have?  The Lion buildbot is down, and we don't yet have 
one for El Capitan. 

Do you have custom variants set?  Only default variants are used for building 
the binary packages.
