I think what Andrea is planning to do here is simply/roughly to get an unofficial QtWebKit 2.3 branch out there that could be used against Qt 4.8. Clearly it would be catering mostly for the needs of KDE, so I don't really expect him to make it work on say Symbian. That'd allow KDE appss relying on webkit to benefit from the changes that made it into trunk after 2.2 was branched, such as Lindsay's work to get spell checking working [1]. I don't think there's any will to "fork" anything here, and I expect to see patches on bugs.webkit.org if some bugs that require getting fixed there are stumbled upon in the process. I don't believe there is any intention of developing new APIs in WebKit1 either, so maybe the wording was confusing but I think the intent is solely to bring an update out there for people who don't want to run WebKit trunk in apps they use everyday. I think in practice it's a nice way of bridging the time gap between what came with Qt 4.8 and what will be in Qt 5 which, for a fast moving project such as WebKit, is quite a big one IMO.
