Well, as to my navigation-rewrite work there is little to show, because
I have mostly been reducing the amount of code.

The visible effects are:

1) you can create navigation widgets with separately specified URIs and
labels, e.g. the URI part does not have to be the same as the label

2) they actually work

3) you get a breadcrumbs widget ("Home > Products > Foobazz")

4) you can have hidden navigation panes (think of /admin, /search or
other top-level URIs you might want to service, but not have displayed)

5) you can have the navigation content rendered separately from the
navigation menu (the teleport widget)

The rest is under-the-hood refactoring, mostly slashing code. I have to
admit I am most happy when I end up with less code than I began with.

But you are right in that I should adapt the demo(s) to the new
interfaces.
