To clarify some of my questions about behavior, I've pushed new unit
tests (including 2 failures) to dev as f69b97c.

This is illustrated in the (now failing) test
get-object-view-fields.direct-shadows-mixedin. Another variant testing
a slightly (but likely to radicalize) different path is (now failing)
get-object-view-fields.direct-shadow-proper-mixin.

This is illustrated in the (now succeeding) test
get-object-view-fields.hidden-direct-noshadow.
