As for the rationale, it is a primitive version of MOP's `compute-effective-slot-definition', which takes the new and inherited direct slots and builds an effective slot. The difference is that CESD has more strategies than direct value override: for example, initargs and accessors are combined. See CLHS 7.5.3 for details.
