For completeness, there's one more note. clisp (built from source with threading enabled, on Linux 64-bit) didn't seem to be able to load lisp libraries whose source had non-ascii characters. These were mostly in code comments. Deleting those chars fixed things. There may have been half a dozen. When clisp choked, it would tell me the file name, I'd fix that file, then it would continue and choke again somewhere else. That's how I got through the process of (ql:quickload 'weblocks).
