---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: RSS feeds on the new site From: Nancy Shoemaker <shoema...@acm.org> Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2013 15:34:24 -0400 X-Message-Number: 1 Not sure how many of you outside of site-resources are still using RSS feeds to display info from AAUW automatically. However, the "tips for using the website" article http://www.aauw.org/resource/tips-for-using-the-aauw-website/ does have information on RSS feeds: <http://www.aauw.org/resource/aauw-rss-feeds/>http://www.aauw.org/resource/aauw-rss-feeds/ I've updated my Yahoo! pipe (<http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=0AmM116A3BGes2_NJxOy0Q>http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=0AmM116A3BGes2_NJxOy0Q) to combine <http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=article,post>http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=article,post and <http://capwiz.com/aauw/RSS/>http://capwiz.com/aauw/RSS/ and that's being used in the footer of both www.aauwnc.org and www.tarheel.aauwnc.org. For those of you who want even more, note that http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=resource will pick up other new stuff posted to the web site -- brochures and newsletters of interest mostly to member leaders. I may look at putting that in the member center of www.aauwnc.org (when I get around to doing that site's facelift for the new branding :-), but I'm certainly going to subscribe to that in my personal RSS reader. [I'm using feedly -- works in a browser and on mobile devices.] Peggy says she's got even *more* info on this. If someone wants to organize a webinar about using RSS (for personal use and/or on web sites), I'd be glad to do a demo where we can talk about o what's RSS anyway? o when do you want an RSS reader rather than just following friends and pages on Facebook? o (for this group) how do you choose RSS feeds to highlight on your own website? -N ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: RE: RSS feeds on the new site From: "Woods-Clark, Peggy" <cla...@aauw.org> Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2013 20:17:12 +0000 X-Message-Number: 2 Good timing Nancy! As promised, here is even more information concerning specific feeds on the new website and how to access them. The answers are in direct response to an e-mail Nancy sent earlier this week: 1. Is there any RSS feed that captures the AAUW news that's neither a blog nor a public policy alert? Yes. There are several different content types on the new website that can be republished individually Blog (current events, commentary, and stories) http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=post Article (what's new with AAUW) http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=article Resource Post (tools and information for the business of AAUW) http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=resource Research Post (research) http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=research or they may be grouped together to publish your desired feed. For instance, http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=article,post is the AAUW Updates news feed that pulls together all articles and blogs in one feed. The important aspect is to use and separate the "post_type" as seen at the end of the first four links above with a comma to achieve the desired feed string. National averages one to two blogs and articles published per day and quite a few research posts. In deciding which feed you choose to republish on branch or state websites, the amount of content generated may be a consideration. 2. Is there any way to enable RSS feeds on specific categories of information that might allow users to subscribe to particular areas of the site outside of the blog? Yes. The URL syntax is a matter of stringing together our taxonomy although the taxonomy for blogs, articles, and research posts are distinct from resource posts. For Resource Posts, the taxonomy is post_type= resource_category= resource_tag= Resource_category is displayed as "Resource Type" on the site and resource_tag as "Tag". You can see the list of options by visiting the Resource section at http://www.aauw.org/resources/. Note that any multi-word item will be separated by a hyphen. For example, the resource_tag for Position Papers would be position-papers. The feed syntax is http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=resource&resource_category=guides&resource_tag=archives The example above would publish a feed of all resource posts identified as guides and tagged as archives. An ampersand separates each element of the taxonomy. Strings of post_types, resource_category, and resource_tag may be created by separating the element with a comma (no spaces). For the other three content types, the taxonomy is post_type= issue= tag= You can see the list of options by visiting the Issues page at http://www.aauw.org/issues/. The feed syntax is http://www.aauw.org/feed/?post_type=article,posts&issue=education&tag=higher-education The example above would publish a feed of all articles and blogs identified under the issue of education and focused on higher education. The legislative alerts RSS ( http://capwiz.com/aauw/RSS/ ) will remain as is for now. Site Resources subscribers, updates have already been made to the AAUW national feed widgets on your sites to include blogs and articles. If you have requests for changes, please contact Megan Morrison at site-resour...@aauw.org<mailto:site-resour...@aauw.org>. All other RSS-related questions may be directed to the listserve or to webmana...@aauw.org<mailto:webmana...@aauw.org>. If you all are interested in an RSS webinar, please let me know. We can certainly organize it from the national end. Please let us know about other technology topics that would be beneficial as well. Thanks!
