First of all, many many thanks to anyone who's responded.
Especially the
basic idea of 1000 sessions / instance has helped me very much.
To reiterate, this is what we can get by on. YMWV.
Also I
got to know that Apache server has a 20.000 user limit.
I'm sure this is also configurable and dependant on your specific
situation.
However I've got one additional question. Technically speaking would
deploying as a java servlet increase the performance (on the same
specifications (Tiger Server, XServe Dual 2.3 Ghz)? I've read the
relevant chapter in Practical Webobjects (thanks Sasha and Charles)
and
I've got the idea that deploying as a Servlet can(or may) increase the
performance because of its Inherent Multithreaded nature.
The difference between deploying a multithreaded app in a servlet and
in JavaMonitor in nil, except that you get to say "we use J2EE" with
the former.
One last question would be if the same application is deployed as a
Servlet on a, say, Yellow Dog Linux rather than Tiger Server on the
same Xserve would that increase the performance by any means? I've
seen
some benchmarks that Yellow Dog is way better than OS X Server when it
comes to DB handling and multi threaded applications. Would that be
the
case for WO? <http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2520>
Good article, and it makes some interesting points. To answer your
question: probably, maybe. For me, the ease-of-use of Mac OS X far
outstrips my need for performance. Maybe if I was handling 1 million
concurrent users, I'd be singing a different tune...
