Thanks everyone for the suggestions and help. The install was successful. I used the information provided by Herb Ruth to creating the soft link named gnutar in /usr/local/bin to the tar app (i.e. cd /usr/local/bin; ln -s /usr/local/bin/tar ./gnutar). Thank you. Thank you. Banging my head on the wall was getting a little painful and difficult to stay focused.
