With WebObjects 5.3 you may keep using Java 1.5 (at least for testing), Java 1.4 is the official supported version. I have had some problems about log files while running instances with Java 1.6 under WebObjects 5.3 WebObjects 5.4 would be a better choice if you need Java 1.6
