Furthermore, if I'm wrong in my assumption it should be possible for
the plugin (or the channel?) to maintain a space of new PKs.
I would need to know more about the life of the objects involved to
make those decisions.

Which is exactly the part that can't be done...
From what I recall with Mysql is that you insert a row and then
retrieve a last_insert_id. Which implies you have to insert the
row *first*
