Hi Ken

I appreciate your effort to help.

I'm really hoping to get clear answer from Apple. For every webobjects developer who has contributed to this discussion on the past by saying "It is clear that you do not need a license for Y" there has been another coming along the next day saying "it is clear that you do need to buy a license for Y". You guys all sound convincing and knowledgeable to me, but the contractions and ambiguities continue.

You see Cliff's statement "The WebObjects Developer license is the one we modified in 5.3.1 to permit deployments on other platforms." as clearly meaning "if you have a WebObjects Developer license, you can deploy anywhere". What if I buy one copy of OS X, thereby getting WebObjects developer license, but I have 10 clients wanting to run my application on Sun boxes? Are they all licensed because I have OS X? or do they each have to buy OS X Server to get licenses? These clients are liable to ask me how much they WebObjects license will cost. At the moment the only answer I could give would be " I don't think you need one, according to some of the people on the developer list, but I don't know for sure because Apple won't say". At WWDC 2005 a number of developers were quite agitated at the level of confusion. The Apple folks there were unprepared for the level of concern expressed and we eventually accepted assurances that a clear statement would be issued soon. I think we're still waiting.

It SEEMS to me that WebObjects is now free, but I'm not certain. That's why I would like an Apple spokesperson to come out and say this. Otherwise all we have is a well intentioned interpretation of Apple's licensing legalese. As we know that Apple have continued to display web pages that give incorrect (i.e., outdated) licensing terms I'm afraid I consider all such interpretations as unreliable. People on this list have pointed out explicit licensing rules as published by Apple only to have someone else come back the next day and say "oh that page is out of date. It only applies to version xxx. I suppose we should change it."

Denis,

In my view, Cliff made it very clear here:

The WebObjects Developer license is the one we modified in 5.3.1 to permit deployments on other platforms.

There you go - if you have a WebObjects Developer license, you can deploy anywhere. The only sticking point (which Apple admits) is that you need to jump through a few hoops to do it.

That changed again in 5.3.1! :) Deployment is now free, whatever
the platform is.

is it?

That's the WebObjects Deployment license. The WebObjects Developer license is the one we modified in 5.3.1 to permit deployments on other platforms. If you're going to develop on OS X (WebObjects Developer) and deploy on non-Apple hardware, the OS X Server (WebObjects Deployment) license is
irrelevant.

Hi Cliff

Despite your very welcome efforts I'm sorry to say this is still not clear to me. You wrote

irrelevant.
but I don't know whether this means I don't need a license to deploy on non-Apple hardware, or that a license won't be any use on non-Apple hardware. Is it irrelevant because it doesn't work?

Many helpful and informed WO developers have contributed to this discussion in the past, but as far as I can tell they each contradict the preceding poster and the result remains inconclusive.

Is it possible to put a true/false response to the following statements?

"If I buy OS X 10.4+ I will get a licensed copy of WebObjects developer for no extra charge. "

"If I buy OS X Server 10.4+ I get a WebObjects deployment license for no extra charge."

"If I deploy my WebObjects app on non-Apple hardware I do not need to get a license from Apple"

                or

"If I deploy my WebObjects app on non-Apple hardware I should still buy a copy of OS X Server in order to get a license that I will need use when deploying on the non-Apple hardware"

And one more that I'm not sure about.

"For versions of WebObjects > 5.2 there are no WO deployment libraries for non-Apple hardware. If I want to use WO 5.3.1 and deploy on Linux I have to abandon wotaskd and use J2EE
