We have been using Cayenne with good success. It is pretty fast and easy to deploy (cayenne.jar, cayenne.xml, your custom Java classes). The API is very EOF like, it can even import an EOModel.
Cayenne recently got accepted as an Apache sandbox project. This should help the long term viability a bunch.
