I have to disagree with you.
And I would have to agree with you (I think ;-) since I made a typo.
What I meant to say was:

The most extreme case of this is the D2* tools. Inexperience
developers can follow the script and have an industrial strength 3-
tier CRUD application up and running in no time.
However, if they want to make any changes (non trivial ones) they
often have no idea - there is still the learning curve to climb
(right from the bottom of the mountain, eventually).
I guess it is because the abstraction is not complete with these
tools (unlike, for example, compilers where we can almost completely
ignore the details underneath).
As I said before, I am involved in a large sophisticated project
and we use WOBuilder for all of our HTML development. It would be
a stretch to claim that my enthusiasm for the tool were derived
from a lack of in-depth understanding of the frameworks either. We
all work in different ways.
Please don't get me wrong - I was NOT trying to imply that people who
use these tools are inexperienced or lack in-depth understanding.
They're great tools for experienced developers too!
I was just saying that they can give new and inexperienced users a
false sense of security or competency which all-to-quickly can come
crashing down.
By "inexperienced" here, I mean someone who maybe doesn't know much
Java, HTML, or SQL, let alone have a good understanding of OO, OO
design etc.
But there is, as I mentioned, also the dilemma in that these tools
allow experienced developer to evaluate a framework more quickly, and
to learn it more quickly.
And I agree we all work in different ways.
