So what you're saying is to move the validation into form action instead of the EO and throw the exception there?
No. Absolutely not! I am suggesting that ensuring this is unique is not trivial.

I would move the validation into the form action and insert the validation info into the component from there rather than try and do it from the EO. Also add a unique index to the column in your database to be safe.

In my own application , I get the database to give me unique numbers from a sequence. I do not let the user choose/generate it.

^^^ I do the same thing in a more database-agnostic fashion. I think this is good advice.
