Actually i use the system program sips ( only on MacOS X ) to generate
thumbnail from a file
see "man sips"
before discovering ERAttachment i made some methods / entities that
store images in database and write also a cache file on disk, when u
have to access the images the methods check for the cache file
existence, if it's not found it regenerate file image and thumbnail
from database storage
