Hi Chuck,

There should be no problem running mixed versions (FB4 and FB5)
in a replicated setup as long as you stay away from FB5 specific features. FB5 supports some new data types that are not in FB4 (ie. anytype, circadate).
So I would recommend you convert the clients first and then the master.

Hi Baiss,

The FB4 and FB5 databases are not binary compatible. So as Chuck
suggested you will need to do an export and import.

Also it is not required to obtain a new license. You can just copy the
LicenseString file from the FB4 installation.

As for the transaction logs they are compatible. This means you
can do roll forward with an FB5 database on an FB4 transaction log.
This is useful when minimizing downtime while converting a live database.

I had not thought about that before, but that is a good thing to know. Thanks!

Does that mean if you are updating a replication setup, that the master and replicas can be updated independently?

For major version upgrades you often have to do a WRITE ALL export and re-create and import the export. That is the case here. You will need to reinstall 4.x.

I had been running FB 4.latest on the latest MacMini running 10.6.2 and I downloaded and installed FrontBase Server - 5.1. 2.

I got a new FB license, I deleted the Transaction Logs,

Never a good idea.

and re-booted; but he databases won't start giving the error:

Database Financial on host baissYi.local failed to start. Here's the last entry from the log file: 2010-03-13 16:37:33 -- *** New log file point: 2010-03-13 16:37:33 *** 2010-03-13 16:37:33 FrontBase Server - 5.1.2 64-bit on Mac OS X [Server]
2010-03-13 16:37:34 Improper contents of the database
2010-03-13 16:37:34 Stopped

Isn't there an easy way out?
I did the big Intel conversion in going to FB 4.x from FB 3.x.
