Thanks Dave, I manually downloaded the update and still had issues and didn't know where to find a log file.
I ended up resetting/re-installing the os and then re-running all the updates. The java update installed successfully. eclipse now starts successfully, but I have lost the java 1.5 settings. When I click on the JRE to enable the 1.5 and there is no other option. I have had this problem before, so will need to find out what fixed it last time.
