<table >
<tr>
<th>a headline</th><th>Status</th>
</tr>

<wo:loop list="$thelist" item="$theItem"
<tr>
<td>column 1</td><td><weboboject name="theInPlaceEditor"/></td>
</tr>
</wo:loop>

WOD

theInPlaceEditor : AjaxInPlaceEditor {
        value = theItem.itemName;
        submitOnBlur = true;
        okButton = false;
        cancelLink = false;
        action = saveStatusChange;
        size = "15";
        clickToEditText ="Status";
        editClass="editInPlaceClass";
}

the action is an method that saves the editing context when you deselect the
editor.

You really need to look over the AjaxExamples
