Mark,

I experienced many problem with the default apache 2.4 MPM (event), I think the 
adaptor is not compatible with it. I switched to the previous default one and 
no more problems. 

By default, this choice is done before compiling apache with the configure 
script by adding  --with-mpm=prefork
