Containers is the way to go. I use LXC and OpenVZ to create multiple containers 
for Apache, MySQL, etc. for our dev/tests/staging environment. Less overhead 
than creating multiple virtual machines, while having control, like running 
Apache 2.4 on a container while running 2.2 in another.
