Hi, I've been on 2018-09 (which is 4.9) since October and it's been fine. Planning to test 2018-12 soon. But I don't use EOModeler any more (because Cayenne), so I can't say if that even still works at all :)
Java 8 features support has been improving every release, let alone Java 11. So I'd say the recommendation whether or not to upgrade largely depends on how fast you're modernizing your code base.
