We hold these truths to be hard won knowledge, and not self-evident:
1. $25K for a WO license is an obvious cost.
$100K for an engineer to spend a year writing:
sprintf(queryString, "select * from table where key=%d",key);
Is completely invisible because the engineering manager has to get a PO
signed for $25K to buy WO, but he doesn't have to get his boss to sign
paychecks every week.
2. There's nothing more expensive then a cheap programmer/consultant.
3. Half the benefit of WebObjects is that it requires smarter programmers,
so the stupid ones get sloughed off into doing HTML instead of screwing
up the project.
4. 60% of MIS departments report to the CFO (yes, the bean counters.) with
typical results.
5. Even really cool technologies, like WO, aren't universally applicable.
Sometimes web form->email is all a customer needs.
6. WO has no "hobbiest" licensing whereby people can learn the technology
without a large amount of investment. How about a 5 tpm license, even
if MOSXS only? You can get started with Perl with a download. Or maybe an
ISP license, where ISPs can offer WO as a service, and pay per customer.
7. There's nothing more expensive then a cheap Microsoft solution.
