Awhile ago, I asked what people were seeing as rates for WO
programmers, and said I'd post back to the list with averages and
medians. Since I only got 3 answers, here they are raw:

   $175/hr

NY: $200/hour and up, especially for WO
Silicon Valley: $150, short time: $175-225
   Dallas: $100/hr

   Apple Enterprise charges:
          Senior: $250
Junior: $150-250 (C++/Java billing at $100 in this area)

Now these are the "gross" rates, I'd expect that if you got a gig
through a body shop, your net would be 66%-75% of this. Plus at this
rate, its hard to justify adding travel on top of this, so that might
lower your net rate a bit as well. I'm just guessing on the travel
however, as none of my three respondents mentioned if that included
domestic travel expenses.

For comparison, Arthur Andersen and IBM Global services charge
$225/hour for people fresh out of college. (Its good to be the king.)

  Why the high rate:

I would expect a WO programmer to be able to setup a UNIX web
server, to know SQL and database programming, to know C++, Java,
Objective C, and HTML. In consulting terms, that makes a WO
programmer a system administrator, an OO programmer, and a
web/internet programmer. That means that a WO programmer is really 3
people. Unfortunately, you can't charge three times as much, but a
50% premium over a C++ engineer isn't unreasonable.
