It works fine in the dev server. I'm not setting web.ctx.status anywhere. I'm going to dive in and see if I can get it working with apache and mod_wsgi. This is one of the more random errors I've seen. :^)
I'll post back if that works alright, but I'm happy to test out any theories anyone else has. Thanks.
