$# is great for 'internal' comments -- like what the embedded python is trying to do, but for debugging html/css on the browser-side, often it's useful to have <!-- --> comments displayed (I like to embed the name of the template within the external HTML if a page doesn't work, it's easier for me to track down which template has the incorrect code.).
