I would like to pass on this very interesting message
that I received today.
It describes a new ACCMAIL method of FTP-uploading files
to a server, something which until now has been
impossible.
I have not tried it, I don't know how well it works, and
I have not thought about the security implications of
sending your account password via a third-party server.
People with an InternetTrash account don't need it, but
if you are attempting to maintain a web site on one of
the free webspace providers that permit cgi scripts,
you might find it very useful.
There are very few free webspace providers that allow you
to install your own cgi scripts. Hypermart is one of them.
Who will try it, and send us some feedback?
--------------------------------------------------------------
I just made the first free publicly accessible "server"
for FTP-uploading via e-mail for accmailers - people who
have e-mail only access and can't use a FTP client. It's
not exactly server (I haven't access to a suitable
computer), but it works. :)
I learnt Perl/CGI, wrote a script (600 lines) and set it
up on a free webspace provider allowing user CGI
scripts.
An accmail user registers a free POP3 account (using
accmail methods) once.
Then the user sends an e-mail letter with data for
FTP-uploading and appropriate commands to the POP3
account.
Then the user sends script's URL (with POP3 account's
hostname, username and password as parameters) to a
web-mail server.
The web-mail server requests the web-server to invoke
the script.
The script transfers data from POP3 account to FTP
server and deletes the letter.
The user gets a log from the script via the web-mail
server.
A little complicated, but who'll let me to set up a real
mail->FTP server?
If you are interested, download manual:
http://mail2ftp.hypermart.net/ In the future address of
the page with the manual can change.
My page http://elena.stealth.ru/mail2ftp.htm will
always point to correct address.
