Hi Michelle, Thanks for the much-needed update. I've got some comments and noted some typos: - there is a space lacking in the 2nd paragraph: "UnitedStates" - I think the taglines should be quoted: "Based on OpenSolaris" - I find this sentence a bit overreaching, since Sun is not the sole user of the branding "Solaris" around the world (see for example http://www.solaris.fr): "Similar trademarks: Any mark containing the letters Solaris is considered to be similar to Sun's trademarks." - I find this sentence ironic: "If someone is confused into thinking that what isn't OpenSolaris is in fact OpenSolaris, you are probably doing something wrong." Because, well, what *is* OpenSolaris here? Eg, does this FAQ apply to the logos for the OpenSolaris.org portal, or the OpenSolaris.com one? Source code, Project, Binary distribution? If it's all of them, it should be specified, else, it's confusing. - I find this one awkward: "Please do not include mock or parody products with names based on the OpenSolaris trademarks." IANAL, but I think we have a legal right to parody in my country and many others (and I've seen it *many* times for branding). I find it threatening to ask people not to do what they're legally entitled to. Realistically speaking, the OpenSource communities already do this quite often (I've seen devils do things to penguins...). I think that if Sun wants to do OpenSource projects, it should accept what goes with it, including bad humour and tasteless parody. It will happen anyway. And you won't be able to do anything about it. - This one I find really weird: "(e.g., do not register domain names under your user group name)." Does that means that full names are not ok, but acronyms are? My UG does have a registered domain name for its acronym, and a Google search shows we're not the only ones. An alternative would be for Sun to create a DNS alias on opensolaris.org pointing to our own server. I should add that, in our case, it's Sun France that asked us to register as a non-profit organization more than 2 years ago to have a formal relationship with them. The policies in use when we established our group were those, and we respected them: http://web.archive.org/web/20060110224422/http://www.sun.com/policies/trademarks/#20e2 Thank you for your attention, Laurent -- / Leader de Projet & Communauté | I'm working, but not speaking for \ G11N http://fr.opensolaris.org | Bull Services http://www.bull.com / FOSUG http://guses.org | _______________________________________________ website-discuss mailing list [email protected]
