Some background for the curious... We do standard master/slave replication between two database machines. We should be able to swap master/server roles seamlessly -- i.e. little or no downtime and no unexpected breakage. But places where the hostname of the database server is hardcoded (apps, modules, etc.) can cause problems, which is what happened here.
