I think I have a work around.
On a suggestion from an entry in the mozilla bugs list:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=349838
I added:
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
in the device section of my xorg.conf file and now the png file
appears ok.
It seems to be a problem with either my video device driver and/or
Xorg...
