This can be corrected in a simple way with the gimp. Convert the image
to RGB (Image->Mode->RGB) then use Colors->Color-To-Alpha to correct
white (or black as needed) to instead be transparent. Then save.
I've attached corrected versions of each image. Some additional
work may be needed to make them slightly more opaque, but they
looked roughly OK to me.
