that is intended behaviour. Previously, I've been using an extension called httpsLogin that transported the cookies. However, that extensions was considered insecure, so we simply redirected the login page to HTTPS. However, this does not transport the cookie - so, in a nutshell, at the moment, this does not seem to be possible.
