Maybe just have a blue button for "Donation Optional" next to the main install package download button. I do not think a "pop up" or something like that would be "proper" when a person is attempting to download the free package. The may get it into their heads that LO is a "donation-ware" and requires a donation to download. I would just have something on the download page that will easily get them to the donation page. We must make sure the user does not feel that he/she must pay/donate something to receive LO.
I think if we present it in a proper way, it can do a lot of good. Most people are not aware - now that the fundraising challenge is over - that we are still in need of money. One of the most used pages is, for sure, our download page. If we can use this to tell people that the software is free, but they can support us with a donation, I think we can get many more donations and raising awareness.
Of course, I agree that it shouldn't nagging, only informing.
