We activated the default sign up mechanism in the past, but we got about 600 or 700 accounts with no contribution (robot accounts or the like) for each site. We had to manual clean up both sites (extensions and templates) and that was a very tedious task (three people worked on that over many days) (comparing lists and deleting unused accounts).
The form at the bottom of the site is protected with a question-answer proof and I could manage the requests. If we need an additional solution I could create a second form for each site, if people need an account to rate products.
