Seems like 'ns2' is not giving an ip-address for 'archive'; but does for 'archives' (plural).
Good call on that. DNS zones were identical on both servers but the /versions/ of Bind were different. The old version doesn't like the fact it was a CNAME pointing to another CNAME. The new version of Bind allows that so it was never caught.
I've made the change to the old serve and it's giving out IP addresses now. That should fix your on-off issue.
