There was also a lot of angst about the fact that it existed at all in several threads on SFWNV. It appears that it's initial introduction was with the JDK, and there were several people who thought it shouldn't have gotten through ARC. On the other hand, there were others who thought it wasn't clean, but has worked out reasonably well. I'm probably on that side of the equation.
