And since I don't want to be maintaining it locally on my machine but didn't want it to get lost in case there is future interest, it's now available on a web stack community repository. You can get it via % hg clone ssh://anon at hg.opensolaris.org/hg/webstack/phpmyadmin which you can build and experiment with locally.
