When I had posted these options (having a new directory or having the file
as .sample within conf.d dir) and asked for suggestions as to which one
would be the better option, I just received one response and that was 
for the directory.
I also had a discussion with Arvind on this and he too suggested to go 
with a separate directory.

Sounds good. But, should we eliminate just original/extra/  or the 
entire original/ directory ?
