The reason that work hit a wall wasn't technical. Thing is, the
opensolaris source tree is only one, so it has only one copy of this
default htdoc/index.html. But many differently named/branded distros
are built of the same source tree. The various samples that were
floated all had some distro-specific naming in them.

IMO we should just go ahead and create a default index page with all
the technical content, devoid of any distro naming (i.e. no 'Solaris',
no Nevada, no Indiana, no SXDE, etc), only the technical content that
matters. The distro builders/namers can sort out their naming issues
later, or never, but at least the tech info will be there.
