A url includes more detail than your short version (just a domain)
contains.  Because you are not giving all of the information needed,
your environment is making some guesses about what you might really mean
and simply not arriving at what you think it should.

Great this is a complete url, so you can expect that to work.  You could
leave off the '/index.html' bit unless you really want a specific file,
that way the webserver will give you it's default file, just as it would
in a browser - unless you type in ....index.html in your address bar 8).

It is just trying to be helpful.
As you have already determined that specifying a complete url works, I
would stick to that approach.
