The link shows how we "soft fail" using Ant and <http://lists.canoo.com/pipermail/webtest/2009q2/012348.html> has Ian's implementation of the same solution in Groovy. DataDriven can also be used to achieve a similar result, but I feel it's a bit confusing and clunky as you still need to provide a sheet with 1 row of unused data and the intent of the test isn't as clear when you come across a dataDriven tag in the middle of the steps. I should mention, using any of these solutions will not only suppress the failure, it will suppress any error messages associated with the failure, which can make debugging the test failures difficult. But it is not going to do what you are expecting, because this properties just apply for test cases and you are looking for something that applies for steps. I had the same issue some time ago and I couldn't find any solution yet.
