TALES OF TERROR EMERGE FROM MUMBAI ORDEAL: Eyewitnesses have described dramatic scenes of terror in the assault by Islamic militants in Mumbai -- from bodies in pools of blood to desperate hotel guests arming themselves with cleavers to survive. Caught up in the brazen attack on India's financial hub, many said they cowered in the dark for hours, waiting to be rescued and fearing the militants would shoot them dead at any moment. "We heard some gunshots. We barricaded the restaurant and we moved everybody into the kitchen," said Faisul Nagel, a South African security guard who was in the Taj Mahal hotel with colleagues when the assault began. Using tables and refrigerators to barricade themselves in, Nagel said they armed themselves with the only weapons they could put their hands on.

Pakistan has vehemently denied them. But no matter who turns out to be responsible for the Mumbai attacks, their scale and the choice of international targets will make the agenda of the new American administration harder. A British shipping tycoon was gunned down by terrorists in a Mumbai hotel yesterday, moments after telling of his panic by mobile phone. Entrepreneur Andreas Liveras told reporters how he and other guests had locked themselves in the basement of the luxury Taj Mahal Hotel (above) while gunmen ran amok. Moments after he took the call, the 73-year-old entrepreneur died from several gunshot wounds. He is the first Briton known to have been killed in the terror attacks, which have so far left a total of at least 125 dead and another 325 wounded, mostly innocent Indians. Several other Britons are known to be injured. How brave of our fanatical Muslim heroes to be running around with automatic weapons killing defenseless people.
